Really? He Sex Rations?

My significant other calls himself a “camel.”  I must have found the only man in the world who rations sex!  Do or say something that offends him and that is it; you will get none for a while.  I am currently in the midst of one such punishment.  We have not had sex since December!  I do not want to cheat and I do not like toys, I mean why should I when there is a warm body next to me!  I have no idea what to do next but the more he rations, the more sex is on my mind.  Thank you for allowing me to rant.

Doo Funny and the Funky Futon

Maybe it is I and I apologize for any hurt feelings; however, I would sooner sleep on the floor than accept a used mattress from a dirty home.  Heck, I would not accept a used mattress from anyone.   I am certain that I would have insomnia just trying not to think what stories the mattress beneath me has to tell.   After I finished pondering stories, I would likely begin scratching my skin raw sure that I was being attacked by flees, bed bugs, and lice (head and body variety).   These are just a few of my reasons for declining a free used mattress and then there is Doo Funny.

My iPhone rings, and it is Doo Funny.  His voice was full of delight and excite as he explained that a wealthy coworker offered him a gently used futon bed.  Apparently, his friend’s financial status weighed heavily on the deal.  Unable to hit the brakes and divert the flow of words that would ask him in multiple terms “what, are you crazy? Who does that?”  Of course Doo Funny became silent before I could regain control of my lips.  I had dampened his excitement.  At this point, I apologized and wished Doo Funny luck, after all, a bed from a supposed wealthy friend has somehow makes the offer acceptable.

Skip ahead 24 hours and my iPhone rings again.  Doo Funny is on the other end, and this time, there was no delight or excite.  Doo Funny goes on to state, “I have never seen such a filthy home.” “Garbage was all over the floor and the futon mattress is so dirty.”  I guess the wealthy can be trifling too!  Poor Doo Funny, I felt sorry for him for a brief second before I shouted, “I told you!”  Doo Funny replies, “I am disappointed in my co-worker.”  “I will keep the bed but I am going to dump the mattress.”

The moral of this story is that it is unsanitary to accept used bedding from strangers (wealthy or poor).  Doo Funny, I am sure, is a closet junk collector who is not aware!

The Mighty Cranberry

Cranberries, the UTI champion and highly rumored cure for UTIs (urinary tract infections) no data to support their claim to fame.  Unfortunately, there is no data proving that the mighty cranberry can treat UTIs.  For the sake of the cranberry’s reputation, it has been proven that cranberries prevent bacteria (the UTI culprit) from sticking to the wall of the bladder, which may decrease the risk of acquiring a UTI.  Given this, it is safe to drink all of the cranberry juice you can get your hands on.  Drinking plenty of water will also help reduce the risk of acquiring a UTI by flushing the urinary tract with water.
If you think you may have a UTI, see your physician as the mighty cranberry is not strong enough to defeat E. coli and other bacteria after they have taken residence in your urination tract.
Common symptoms of a UTI are dysuria (painful urination), frequent urination, back pain, hematuria (blood in urine).  A UTI left untreated will lead to pyelonephritis (kidney infection).

Fever Refresher: for the new kids on the block

If your child has a fever, (a temperature higher than normal) her body is fighting off an infection.  If you are not sure whether your child has an unusually high temperature, get a thermometer and check your child’s temperature.  Note that depending on the thermometer and which body part you use to check your child’s temperature, you will likely get different temperatures.  The most common methods of taking a child’s temperature is by armpit (axillaries), by mouth (oral), by ear (tympanic), and, rectal (needs no explanation).

Not every fever requires medication.  For instance, if your child’s temperature is barely above normal and she is behaving as usual (playing, drinking fluids, eating), her body is fighting an infection and at this point, is winning.  If this is the case, pay attention to your child’s habits, recheck her temperature periodically, and keep offering fluids.  If your child has a high fever, has stopped drinking, and, playing, consider administering the appropriate dose of Tylenol or Motrin for your child’s age and weight.  Continue to offer your child fluids, use cool compresses, sponge bathing, and remove excessive clothing.  Excessive clothing inhibits your child’s body to fight the infection and bring her temperature down.  Note that if your efforts to reduce your child’s temperature cause shivering, remove compresses, and add clothing one layer at a time until shivering stops.

If your child has had a fever for over 24 hrs, is under 3 months of age, is vomiting, or having diarrhea, experiencing seizures, seek medical attention.

If you have questions concerning giving your child the proper medication at the correct dosage amount, seek advice from your child’s pediatrician or your pharmacist.  It is important to note that medications for infants, toddlers, older children, and adults contain differing amounts of medication.  Do not substitute one for the other or switch back and forth between formulations.

  • If you have concerns about your child’s health or medications, see your child’s pediatrician.

The Truth About Bland Diets

Lately you have not been feeling well.  You have had nausea, diarrhea, and maybe even vomiting.   You have just left the doc’s office where he may or may not have given you a prescription; however, he has recommended you to start with a bland diet after your nausea and/or vomiting has subsided.  Now you are driving home and wondering, “what is a bland diet?”

Your provider has recommended you restart your regular diet by eating a bland diet to give your gut (stomach) the opportunity to recover from your illness.  The type of foods you should eat are toast, saltine crackers, plain rice, applesauce, tea, yogurt, and pretty much anything else that is not fried, spicy, dairy, or good tasting.  In addition to the listed foods to eat, remember to drink plenty of water or sport drinks to avoid dehydration from diarrhea and vomiting.   Sports drinks will replace electrolytes lost through diarrhea and vomiting.

The bland diet has gone by other names such as the Brat Diet or the Bratty Diet.  Brat and Bratty Diet are both acronyms for the foods that make up the bland diet.  For instance, brat is short for bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast.

Before starting this diet be certain that a bland diet is exactly what your physician has recommended.   For children, please consult with your child’s pediatrician before starting your child on a bland diet. Some pediatricians no longer recommend a bland diet for young children, as it is deficient in fats, proteins, and other needed nutrients.   Seek emergency medical services if your child develops signs of dehydration (sunken cheeks, dry eyes with no tears, persistent fever or vomiting and/or diarrhea lasting more than 2-3 days).  Children are unable to tolerate dehydration, as would an adult.
